have to admit i didn’t make it on thursday to the superdesign-london opening, shame, but these pieces are amongst my favourites, some of which i’ve seen before, at PAD, Nilufar, or or the same item, but made in different materials.

Notting Hill

Hope everyone is well. Sadly had to board up yesterday afternoon after about 100 looters apparently threatened to torch the showroom (!) the night before, according to neighbours. Yesterday then seemed eerily quiet, with most of Notting hill either boarded up or closed early, and now all seems peaceful, and hope it stays that way ..... And settles down elsewhere x

Flying visit down to Cornwall to do some designs for an old stone cottage not far from Penzance, to be used as the family's holiday home. Unbelievably rainy weather, so bad we couldn't see St michael's mount on arrival but did as we left ....Image courtesy of Cornwall online

visiting the biennale twice, once in temperatures of about 38 degrees, and again, almost accidentally, a week later, in a more normal 24 degrees, meant that i had the chance to see some of the art works that i literally didn’t have the energy to see first time around (ie. everything above the ground floor if there wasn’t air conditioning)….and to see again pieces i’d loved first time round

Favourite piece was Anselm Kiefer’s Salt of the Earth

image – wallpaper - photographs of seascapes pasted onto lead, and then salt allowed to corrode the metal and the photographs. it doesn’t hurt, either, that the show is in one of the amazing warehouses facing out of venice, so you step outside and you’re on the dockside..

i didn’t manage to make it above the ground floor on my first visit, but had to wander through those doors and sit on the jetty outside and stare at the water …

second time had better luck, liked these - again wallpaper image – by lucio fontana

and had lunch up here, on the terrace at the danieli….with that view..

it’s on til november, but perhaps favourite place of all is open all year on piazza san marco, the olivetti showroom, designed by carlo scarpa, beautiful, picture courtesy of

and then back to the airport by water taxi as the sun set…it just can’t be beaten as a method of airport transfer… x

the chinese character for happiness, shown in duplicate at weddings as a sign of good luck and future joy to the marrying couple, is a charming symbol. found in a more graphic form in a perspex store in new york on canal street, this symbol, now also redolent of 1960’s graphics, led to an idea to use the symbol as the base for a piece of furniture.

in collaboration with giles blunden, of james gilbert and sons, we have made the double happiness table, from blackened steel, images below

i’ve seen a few images recently of black and white as the base colours, highlighted by a strong third, in these cases orange or red…

using warm wood colours as the accent,

obviously, each to their own, so you may not like the pieces i came across this week, but, just to give you an idea of what’s out there….i wandered into the asian antiques gallery, not something that’s usually my particular taste, but there was a real mix in there

loved this…much better in the flesh than in the photo. a rosenthal vase, about 350mm high, 1960s or 1970s, shaped in pressed glass, looks great, with or without anything in it

another love, 1950’s glass, really unusual, not quite so handy for holding flowers….

liked this as part of a mantlepiece decoration, made from marble

…..and a granite door stop, with brass handle

next door, in the twentieth century theatre…..not sure about this, is it rubbish? didn’t ask the price, but rather liked it

more next week, well, if i get there….x

happy 2010 everyone, the beginning of a new decade, the teens??

apparently we should all be into turquoise this year, pantone has announced, so out with the 2009 mimosa, in with the semi-precious stone, always fine with me (although i have to confess a preference for white turquoise..)

it’s been many months since i’ve had the time to write anything, but having selfishly enjoyed reading other design blogs throughout that time, this has to change, and apologies for that. another thing i’m going to attempt is to get to portobello market on saturdays. having lived beside the market for years, and walking through it to get to the studio every day, it seems incredible not to actually go to it, but i think for locals, the sudden influx of saturday tourists is a bit of a shocker, so we grab what we need (usually coffees….), dash through and spend as little time there as possible. however, i was there almost by accident a few weeks ago, and have been a couple of times since, and once you get the hang of which stalls sell pieces of interest to you, it’s like a treasure trove. no surprise there i guess…. there’s also katrina phillips shop at no 99, between just north of westbourne grove junction, which always has lovely pieces in, and she has a great eye.

her stock changes all the time. crystal, fossilised wood, 1950s bronze and horsehair lampshades, tableware, a few pieces of mark brazier jones, and now also great jewellery…

and just a cappuccino’s walk from negozio classica on the corner, which calls itself the italian embassy of taste…. perfect.

as we’re right in the thick of it (talbot road becomes one huge outdoor sound stage) we’ll be closed from the evening of friday 28th august, and reopen on the morning of tuesday 1st september. hope everyone has a good bank holiday weekend, and that we have a great carnival. if you’ve never seen a million people dancing on ladbroke grove, you’re missing out!

the july/august 2009 of this great magazine has now arrived in the uk from australia, do try to get hold of a copy if possible. even though we clash seasons, and so sometimes it can be a bit odd perusing winter scenes in the “heat” of august here, the editor has a great eye and many of the features and pieces are taken from the best of european design, along with interesting makers and designers based in australia. this month it features neighbour jenny-lyn, and her great lighting and furniture shop around the corner, sawaya and moroni’s amazing apartment in milan, a beautiful stark belgian apartment, a slick californian home, as well as the best outdoor pool-side changing room ever…..

lazing around for a few days by a pool in the niccone valley, with short bursts of activity, ranging from sourcing in florence to shopping at the local village co-op, was heaven, but it’s always nice to get the concrete back between one’s toes.

a favourite stopping off places in florence is FLAIR, with sister shops now in new york, milan, capri and beverly hills. usually an amazing selection of items from new to vintage, styled against matt black textured walls and towering ceilings, located right on the banks of the river arno

on this visit, the favourite items were the rough slate table, supported by its own weight, acrylic lamps bound in brass, collages and greek key lamps…more really rubbish snaps below

and don’t forget to stop by fabriano for amazing stationery, and writing implements

and finally at luxury boutique hotel,j k place for a reviving glass of prosecco

erwan boulloud……we saw his work in paris, at the maison et objet show earlier in the year, and it’s a very stylish mix of the beauty derived from ancient monuments, and modern industrial materials and techniques, made in limited editions

the detail is extraordinary, cut in concrete and blackened steel

the pieces are slightly reminiscent of the work of carlo scarpa, another favourite, witness his work particularly at the brion tomb in northern italy

we’ve installed a new piece in the showroom briefly, on its way to a client’s house in notting hill, a dining table, made of oak slabs, with the waney edge still in place, and the legs made of blackened steel, to mix the organic with the industrial. we’re loving being able to work with differing makers to create bespoke furniture, harnessing their love of their materials, and originality, pairing odd teams of makers together to see what results….
